My Modeling Career

Imagine you are an architect getting ready to build a house. Before you hammer the first nail, cut the first piece of wood, or pour the first bit of concrete you have to have a blueprint right? If you’re a builder you have to have a guide. You have to have a pattern to follow.

We see this same thought twice in the book of 1 Corinthians (4:16; 11:1). In this first letter to the Corinthians Paul addresses several issues that this particular congregation is going through. He discusses everything from marriage (1 Cor. 7) to the miraculous gifts given to them by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12-14). In the midst of all of this discussion Paul states twice “be imitators of me.”

The Corinthian church had a lot of problems that need to be sorted out. It wasn’t enough for Paul just to say “do this and that,” Paul knew that they needed someone to follow. They needed to see these words of Paul as a lifestyle, not just ink on parchment. They needed a model.

We’re no different today. We all have issues that need to be dealt with and while all those problems are dealt with in God’s word, we need to see more than just the words on the page…we need a model. Our models can be found in a number of places. We can model the example of Jesus or Paul. We can model the example of our preacher, our pastors, or even our peers.

Regardless of where you find that model, the point is that you have one.  Paul himself even had a model for his life! Paul states that he was an imitator of Jesus (1 Cor. 11:1). Paul was not content with just following a model, he made himself one.

What about you? Are you a model or just a follower? Paul challenged the Corinthians to follow him, and that was followed up by the fact that he followed Christ. In a way Paul challenged them not only to imitate him, but to be imitated as well. They needed to be a model of Christ and that hasn’t changed today. Christians need to be models of the One they follow (Christ) and by that same token Christians need to live in such a way to be modeled.

Don’t wait, start your career as a model today. You model Christ by living out His word in your life (not just Sundays by the way). Follow His word and then encourage others to do the same. Be the pattern they can look back on. Be the blueprint that they can follow. Be the model they can imitate. If you want to see great change in the world, be a model of Christ. Imitate His word and be the model God wants you to be.
